[Philadelphia]:1804. Hand-coloured engraved map of the Eastern and Southern states of the U.S.A., 980 x 1340mm, the map extending from New Orleans to the head waters of the Mississippi and from Georgia to Maine, with inset general map of North America, the map dissected, mounted on linen and folding. A FINE AND ATTRACTIVE WALL MAP OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, first published in 1796. This the second edition of 1804 was reissued to take into account the recent Louisiana purchase from Spain. Abraham Bradley Jr, a lawyer and mapmaker from Connecticut was hired by the Postmaster General in 1791, soon making his mark by devising postal routes and schedules. By 1796 he published his first map of the United States detailing the roads of the new nation, the development of the Ohio territory, postal distances and coach routes. This map was issued just 15 years after the birth of the nation and served to provide an image of the new territorites. The map notes the purchase of the Louisiana territories and records Thompson's expedition up the Missouri in 1798, but just predates the return of Lewis and Clark in 1806 from their historic expedition from New Orleans to Columbia which helped create a new vision of America. The map shows the territory of East Florida in Spanish hands. The territory was seized from Spain in 1810.
