Beschreibung:

BRAM BOGART (1921-2012) Blauwwit, 1964-1969. Blue and white pigment, mixed with oil. Signed and dated on the reverse 'Bram Bogart/ mei 1969'. Titled. Mounted on white painted board with annotation in pencil 'Bram Bogart/ Dec. 1964'. With inscription '44'. In the years 1964-1970 Bogart's style becomes more rigid. He returns to the geometrical forms from his earlier 'sign paintings' (cf. ), circle, square and cross, which represent for him the basic elements that can be found everywhere. Colour is the second defining element in the works from this period. Almost always two contrasting colours are brought together in one image. Bogart, who makes his own paint out of pure pigment, becomes increasingly fascinated by the power of colour itself. He chooses simple, bright colours radiating an inner strength. This interest in colour recalls Yves Klein and his quest to immaterialize art through colour. For Bogart the opposite is true: colour is matter and matter is colour. The titles are as pure and clear as the works. 'Blauwwit' (bluewhite) is nothing but a literal description of the work itself. It doesn't refer to anything else. The works are now reduced to the essential and become timeless. Roggeman writes 'Colour, form, rhythm, spiritual and material transcendence are confirmed in the art of Bram Bogart in a very personal and powerful way. But at the same time temper, intuition and spontaneity give these paintings, how basic they might seem at first glance, a rich and generous character (1).
