BRAUN, Georg (1541-1622) and Frans HOGENBERG (fl. c. 1540-1590). Civitates orbis terrarum . Antwerp and Cologne: Theodor Graminaeus [pt I] and Gottfried von Kempen [pt II] for Philippe Galle and the authors, 1 August 1572-[1575]. Parts I and II bound in one volume, 2° (385 x 290mm). Engraved titles and 116 double-page engraved plates by Hogenberg, Simon Novellanus, et al ., after Hogenberg, Novellanus, William Smith Joris Hoefnagel Cornelius Caymox, et al . (of 117, lacking plate II/33 (Neuss and Bonn), Prague bound after Magdeburg), plate I/1 numbered and the remainder unnumbered, with Barcelona and Granada both on one plate, pt II plates numbered. Text in Latin. Woodcut tailpiece and initials. (Occasional light spotting and marking, some light dampstaining, some neatly-repaired tears, most marginal but occasionally affecting text or image, a few plates trimmed.) 17th-century calf, borders of blind rules, spine ruled in compartments (rubbed, extremities chipped, short tears at spine ends, boards and spine crudely repaired, endpapers replaced). Provenance : Dom Johann von Kempen, canon of Cologne (presentation inscription from Georg Braun on lower margins of titles, that on first title trimmed) -- Bertram Page (?17th-century inscription on pt I title) -- text underlined and annotated by an early hand, leaf numbers added in manuscript to the index of pt I, occasional annotations on the plates of German towns -- Dr A. Reichensperger, Bonn (inkstamp and manuscript label on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITIONS OF PARTS I AND II. A VERY RARE PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY BRAUN TO THE COLOGNE CLERIC JOHANN VON KEMPEN. Born in Cologne, Braun became a Catholic priest and held the post of tutor to the son of the Cologne merchant Heinrich Sudermann from about 1565 to 1577, and it was while in Sudermann's employ that Braun began work on the Civitates orbis terrarum , using the merchant's broad range of commercial contacts in Europe and further afield to garner together the materials for his great work. Braun had ambitions to further his career in the church and in 1575 (the publication year of part II) he presented copies of parts I and II of the Civitates to the City Council of Cologne, following which he was made a canon of the city's church of St George in 1577 (cf. Skelton p.viii). It seems likely that the present copies of parts I and II were inscribed to the canon Johann von Kempen at approximately the same time as the set presented to the City Council, presumably with a similar hope of patronage and advancement. Interestingly, in this set part I bears the dedication to Maximilian II (Skelton, p. xxvi, IA), but not part II (as is normally the case with the first Latin edition), which here contains a dedication to Constantin von Lyskirchen (d. 1581), a friend of Heinrich Sudermann, burgomaster of Cologne, Hanseatic merchant, and Braun's 'principal source' (Skelton p.xviii) for the towns of the Portuguese empire in the East. Vol. II: Adams B-2713. Cf. Koeman (1967-70) B & H 1-2; NMM III, i, 459 (1573-1618 ed.); Phillips Atlases 59 (1612 edition); Skelton 'Introduction', in: G. Braun and F. Hogenberg Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Amsterdam: 1965).
