BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1910-1913 GEORGE MURRAY LEVICK (1876-1956) -- BIBLE, New Testament in English. The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ . Oxford: University Press, [before 1910]. 16° (142 x 100mm). (Damp-staining to front few leaves, small tear to top of title page, pages somewhat crinkled.) Contemporary limp red morocco, spine and upper cover blocked in gilt, gilt edges (edges of covers bent, lightly stained and rubbed, the upper cover with some indentations, gilt lettering tarnished). Provenance: 'New Testament Antarctic Expedition "Terra Nova" 1910.' (lettered thus on upper cover) -- 'Surgeon G.M. Levick On his leaving New Zealand Antarctic Expedition "Terra Nova" 1910 With every good wish A.N. Falconer Seamen's Missionary Dunedin John 3.16' (further inscription on verso of front free endpaper). The Terra Nova arrived at Port Chalmers on Sunday 27 November. Pausing only to re-coal and await the arrival of Scott, Wilson and others who had travelled down from Lyttelton by train, the expedition finally set sail for the south on Tuesday 29 November 1910. It is not clear if A.N. Falconer presented copies of the New Testament to all of the expedition or to selected members only: George Abbott received a copy (see Christie's, 21 September 2000, lot 91) as did Captain Oates (see Christie's, 27 September 1996, lot 169), who recorded the visit of 'a parson' from the 'Missions to Seamen' in his correspondence: 'I had a job helping the ship's carpenter to refit the cross tress on the foremast. It was rather amusing as a parson came up belonging to the Missions to Seamen'. (Oates quoted in S. Limb and P. Cordingly, Captain Oates, Soldier and Explorer , London: 1982, p.165). A surgeon in the Royal Navy, Levick was granted leave of absence in 1910 to accompany the Terra Nova expedition. He served as the Medical Officer and zoologist on Victor Campbell's Northern Party detailed to explore the Victoria Land coast in 1910-12, and was a careful observer of the Adelie penguins at Cape Adare, publishing his Antarctic Penguins in 1914.
