BRITISH MUSEUM -- [COMBE, Taylor, Edward HAWKINS, Charles Robert COCKERELL & Samuel BRICH]. A Description of the Collection of Ancient Marbles in the British Museum . London: W. Bulmer and Co., 1812-1861. 11 volumes, 2° (348 x 290mm). Half titles in volumes I-II, title vignettes, 377 engraved plates after William Alexander Henry Corbould C. R. Cockerell and others, including 6 folding, 9 double-page and one hand-coloured (plate one and a few leaves of text in vol. IX detached, some spotting and browning throughout, stronger in the later vols.). 20th-century blue half cloth (extremities rubbed). This is the first attempt at a complete catalogue of the British Museum sculpture collection, begun by Taylor Combe, continued by Edward Hawkins, and finished by Samuel Birch. Among the collections included are those of Charles Towneley and Lord Elgin. Blackmer 384; Brunet II, 176. (11)
