London: Smith, Elder 1847. 3 vols., 8vo, original blindstamped claret cloth, spines gilt-lettered, uncut, binder's ticket of Westleys & Clark at rear inside cover of vol. 1, spines a little faded with slight wear at ends, a signature in vol. 2 loosening, brown morocco gilt slipcase. FIRST EDITION, 32-page publisher's catalogue dated October 1847 at end of vol. 1, without the fly-title for the catalogue dated June 1847 and without the advertisement leaf for The Calcutta Review following the catalogue found in some copies. Parrish, Victorian Lady Novelists , pp. 87-88; Sadleir 346; Wolff 826; Grolier English 167. A VERY GOOD COPY of a book which is "one of the most difficult of all Victorian novels to find in acceptable condition" (David Magee, Victoria R.I. , 117). Provenance : E.D. Mitchell, signature on each front free endpaper. (3)
