A commemorative bronze bas relief portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette, the lower lip signed L.P., issued to memorialize his tour around the 24 States of the USA from July 1824 to September 1825, [New York: c.1824-25,] diameter: 7.5 inches (190 mm), presented in a circular wooden frame, cracked on one side. Provenance: Messmore Kendall (1872-1959) of Dobbs Ferry, NY; by descent, to his grand-daughter, Sue Kendall Wallingford; Sold to the present owner in 1970. A fine piece issued to commemorate the visit to the United States, of the last surviving French General who came to America's aid at the time of the Revolutionary War. Lafayette and his son Georges Washngton de la Fayette, traveled by coach, barge, steam boat and horse back visiting the new country. Wherever they went monuments were built in his honor and pieces like this made to commemorate his tour. This piece was once in the distinguished Washingtoniana Collection of Messmore Kendall of Dobbs Ferry.
