This second edition of Brookshaw's work was originally published in 12 parts, costing 1 guinea each to subscribers, and was intended "to excite in gentlemen themselves, a predominant turn and ardour for horticultural pursuits." The majority of the 174 specimens illustrated were taken from the Royal Gardens at Hampton Court, but other gardens mentioned in the text include those of the Princess of Wales at Blackheath, Dr. Lettsom at Camberwell, Sir Joseph Banks at Strawberry Hill and Benjamin Goldsmid at Roehampton.
