An expanded second edition ( Illustrations of the recent conchology of Great Britain and Ireland ) was issued in 15 parts with 62 plates in 1837 to 1844. The present work is dedicated to the Duke of Buccleuch & Queensberry, but in his preface Brown writes 'The Author cannot omit remarking how deeply indebted the British Conchologist, and himself in particular, are to the exertions of his friend General Richard Bingham of Melcombe, Dorsetshire, who has made so many interesting discoveries among the minute species.' Contemporary red straight-grained half morocco gilt, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second (some scuffing). Provenance : Richard Bingham (author's presentation inscription 'To Lieut. General Bingham with the best respects of the Author'). VERY RARE - not listed in the standard bibliographies. This may be an offprint from a work originally published in the Memoirs of the Wernerian Society: the frontispiece includes engraved headline 'Wern. Mem. Vol.II.P.501. Plate XXIV', and a 2pp. letter addressed to Professor Jameson, president of the Wernerian Society, is bound before the descriptive text. The letter begins 'For the information of the Wernerian Society, I herewith send you an enlarged Catalogue of the Irish Testacea. You will observe that I have made a considerable addition to that sent on the 14th November 1814.'. (2)
