Beschreibung:

BROWNE, HABLOT K[NIGHT] Twenty matted sheets of drawings for an edition of Venus and Adonis (so far as we can determine, unpublished). The drawings are housed in mats in a green cloth portfolio. Each mat contains five drawings; a central circular design diameter 7 inches (18 cm); and four cornerpieces. The overall measurement of the grouped drawings within the mat is 9 x 12 inches (20 x 30.5 cm). They are rendered in sepia ink with bistre and grisaille washes, with occasional use of charcoal. The drawings are unsigned. The mats have the text appropriate to each group of drawings, written in Browne's hand in ink on a slip of paper, attached at lower left. Case very worn; toning to the mounts, discolorations to the rear from the use of tape, the drawings in generally fresh condition. A delightful suite of drawings by "Phiz," (1815-1882), the most beloved of the artists who illustrated Dickens, and one of the most prominent illustrators of his day. Provenance: By descent from Hablot K. Browne to Valerie Browne Lester, Phiz's descendant and biographer, with her bookplate. The property of Valerie Browne Lester
