BROWNE, John (1642-ca 1700). Adenochoiradelogia: or, an Anatomick-Chirurgical Treatise of Glandules & Strumaes, or Kings-Evil-Swellings. Together with the Royal gift of Healing, or Cure thereof by Contact of Imposition of Hands, performed for above 640 years by our Kings of England . London: Printed by Thomas Newcomb for Samuel Lowndes, 1684. 8 o (175 x 106 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait (trimmed along foremargin) and frontispiece of the "Royal Gift of Healing" by R. White. (Some minor browning and occasional offsetting.) Contemporary dark red morocco, probably by the Queen's Binder B, covers tooled in gold to an all-over design of drawer-handle tools, pointillé volutes, solid and pointillé fleurons including a large pointillé tulip-flower tool, and dots, within a roll-tooled border, the drawer-handles, volutes and floral tools infilled with blank and green paint, spine in six compartments, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the remainder with central assemblage of small leaf tools picked out with black paint and framed by gilt volutes, edges gilt (old rebacking preserving original spine, few other repairs). Provenance : Francis North, second Baron of Guilford (armorial bookplate dated 1703 on verso of frontispiece); Charles Conway (bookplate); Charles F. Cox (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the best contemporary account of the practice of "touching for the King's evil" (scrofula) under the Stuarts, by Charles II's surgeon. Browne had given the first account of cirrhosis of the liver in 1685 and had been appointed by the King as surgeon to St. Thomas's Hospital in June 1683. IN A FINE RESTORATION BINDING WITH A CONTEMPORARY PROVENANCE. Francis North, second Baron of Guilford, was son of the first Baron (1637-1685) who was lord chancellor and king's counsel.
