ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 22 leaves (i.e. written or decorated on 40 pages, including colophon), plus 4 blank vellum leaves at front and 4 at rear, written in a round roman script in black, with some initial letters or words in red or blue. Frontispiece with full-page miniature of Rabbi Ben Ezra, initial-signed by Sangorski, surrounded by a finely illuminated floral border in colors with burnished gold; first leaf with large illuminated initial G in colors against a burnished gold ground with full-border extensions similarly decorated; 6 pages with three-quarter or full borders incorporating decorated initials against burnished gold ground, 9 3-6 line illuminated initals in colors against a burnished gold ground, illuminated monogrammatic headpiece "GS." Bound in full brown morocco by SANGORSKI AND SUTCLIFFE with varicolored morocco inlays, central panel of peacockfeather design surrounded by a border of blue morocco strapwork and a floral design, corners with a quartrefoils design EACH SET WITH AN OPAL, spine elaborately gilt with matching pattern, white morocco doublures with varicolored morocco inlays, white watered silk flyleaves, edges gilt; morocco silk-lined clamshell case. Provenance : Phoebe A.D. Boyle (her sale, Anderson New York, 19-20 November 1923, lot 55 "one inlay missing."); Charles Rosenbloom (Sotheby's New York, 14 June 1993, lot 79 "a right-triangular onlay [1 x 6 mm] lost"). Colophon statement: recto "The poem of Rabbi Ben Ezra executed by the Grolier Society London, London." verso "This copy of Rabbi Ben Ezra by Robert Browning was especially written out, illuminated, and bound by hand and will not be duplicated. The Grolier Society London. Secretary C. Seaman Howell (signed)." The small missing inlay mentioned in the previous condition statements is not apparent anymore.
