Bruno Cassinari’s interest in sculpture first manifested when he was just fifteen but blossomed in the second half of the 1940s, sparked by the works of Marino Marini More specifically, the horse was for Cassinari a true fetish animal; at great length, over the course of his career, he studied its various poses and the force dynamics of its every position. On this bronze slab – the plastic analogue of his work on paper entitled Studio di figure di cavalli from 1982 ( Cassinari. Mostra antologica , Piacenza 1983, Milano 1983, p. 273, no. 142/56) – the pace and the dynamic of the attitudes of the two horses, one in front of the other, is an expedient for skilful organisation of the composition along the two force diagonals anchored on the heads of the two animals. In this image, Cassinari reconciles space and movement, the plastic rendering and the lively motion of the two subjects locked into a formal synthesis, their natural forms still whirling. As the present work shows, the sculptural process forces the artist to more directly and concretely recover the form than he would in painting, through clean, natural plastic modelling, with no burrs, particularly concentrated on the rendering of the crisp, marked profiles of the horses’ anatomies.
