Abel Buell's map of 1784 is the first map of the United States published in America and the first to be copyrighted in the United States; it is also the first map printed in America to show the flag of the United States. Until the New Jersey Historical Society's 1961 exhibition Early Maps of North America , Buell's map had never been in an exhibition and was unknown to scholars.
