BULLIARD, Jean Baptiste François, called Pierre (1752-1793). Flora Parisiensis, ou descriptions et figures des plantes qui croissent aux environs de Paris. Paris: P. F. Didot le jeune, 1776-1783. Bound with: Introduction à flore des environs de Paris . Paris: [Didot le jeune], 1776. 2 works in 7 volumes, 8° (198 x 114mm). Half-title and 2 hand-coloured engraved plates in Introduction ; hand-coloured engraved title to Flora in vol. I, letterpress titles to vols. II-VI, 640 hand-coloured engraved plates, numbered in a contemporary hand, letterpress indices bound with Introduction . (Without two pages of engraved text in Introduction and optional letterpress title to vol. I of Flora , plates 180, 197 and 481 lightly browned.) Contemporary speckled calf gilt, spines gilt in six compartments with red and green morocco lettering-pieces (some joints cracked, others skilfully restored). Provenance : Kenneth K. Mackenzie; bequest to The Horticultural Society of New York (bookplate dated October 1934); De Belder copy (Sale Sotheby's, 27 April 1987, lot 50). FIRST EDITION of Bulliard's finely illustrated Parisian flora, with the Introduction , published in July 1776. The Flora was published in fascicules of twenty plates, with six fascicules constituting one volume, and is complete with 640 plates. The plates were issued without numbers and with a single leaf of descriptive text, printed on one side only, and were to be arranged as desired by the purchaser. Some copies are arranged alphabetically: the present copy follows the Linnaean classification system, and is rare in having both the Nouvelle Table (16 pp.) and the Table française (52 pp.) , which are here bound in the same volume as the Introduction .
