(Occasional neat repairs, mainly to blank margins, affecting a few characters on leaves C6 and G4; A1 repaired at inner margin; leaves B3, E6, F4 and I2-3 just trimmed at outer margin, affecting one or two characters.) 19th-century blue morocco gilt, edges gilt, by F. Bedford. Provenance : Cardiff Castle bookplate. Sixth authorized edition of the Pilgrim's Progress . Ponder warned against a pirated edition in his fourth edition of 1680, and a pirated "fifth edition" of Edinburgh, 1680, is also known. Pforzheimer says of the sixth edition that only four copies can be located, and noted that "None of the early editions are common although they were issued in large numbers. They have literally been read to pieces. ... Most ... were undoubtedly bought by people who were not book-collectors and therefore the usual hazards of survival were multiplied." Wing lists only five copies, four in America. The frontispiece in the present copy is in the second state, with the city inscribed "Destruction" instead of "Vanity". Our copy collates with the British Library copy, where the frontispiece is by 'R.W.' and has the advertisement for the copper plates printed on the verso, rather than the Lenox copy described by Sharrock.
