According to Sharrock, the third edition of Part I "enjoys the distinction of being virtually the first complete edition of The Pilgrim's Progress . It was the first to insert the long discourse between Mr. By-ends and his companions and their subsequent talk with Christian and Hopeful, . . . the last addition of any consequence that Bunyan made to the text." This copy of Part II has a variant state of the title-page, which has been inserted from another unrecorded edition. Here, the author's name is mis-spelt "Bunyon" and the publisher's first name is given as "Nathanirl", not "Nathaniel". Unlike the original title for this edition, whose verso has advertisements and the authorisation to print, the verso of our title is blank. This edition of Part II is bibliographically interesting not only as a first edition, but also because it includes the curious quire F 5 , and a sudden switch to a larger typeface from F2v (p. 100) to F5v (p. 106, but misnumbered as p. 120). Sharrock explains these curiosities thus: "Very probably the manuscript was divided between two compositors, the first to end with signature F, the second to begin with signature G. The matter given the first compositor proved less than had been supposed. Even after resorting to large type, he succeeded in filling out only five leaves of signature F. The remaining leaves of the signature were then, in all probability, cut away." The splitting of the workload between two compositors may also account for the mis-pagination at this point: pages 106-119 are not included in the sequence, perhaps because the second compositor expected to start numbering at page 121. Later the verso of F5 was renumbered as page 120, so that the facing pages would have consecutive numbering. The mis-numbering of pages 13 and 14, recorded by Harrison in the Lenox copy, is present neither in this copy nor in that of the British Library.
