BUONARROTI, Michelangelo -- Esequie del divino Michelagnolo Buonarroti celebrate in Firenze dall' Accademia de pittori, scultori, & architettori . Florence: Giunti, 1564. 4°. Woodcut device on title, historiated woodcut initials. 19th-century red goatskin-backed boards (slightly rubbed). Provenance : Piero Ginori Conti (bookplate). Rare account of the obsequies honouring Michelangelo, held at the church of San Lorenzo usually reserved for princes. Angelo Bronzino, Giorgio Vasari Benvenuto Cellini and Bartolomeo Ammanati decorated the church and the catafalque, which are described here. The chapels were cloaked in black, dramatically highlighting the nave, and the catafalque was surmounted by a pyramidal obelisk which bore bas-relief sculptures of Michelangelo. Ammanati's wife, the renowned Italian poetess, Laura Battiferra Ammanati, composed verses for the occasion which are published here. According to Borsook, these were the first obsequies ever to be published (cf. Bertelà and Tofani, Feste e apparati Medicei , pp.11-12). Adams M-1408; Cicognara 2261.
