A presentation copy of a classic of post-war British literature, the first edition, first issue ; inscribed near the time of publication by the author under his legal name: "To Dr McMichael—a substitute appendix from John B. Wilson June 1962." John McMichael had treated Burgess's wife after a suicide attempt, and the author would later dedicate his 1966 novel Tremor of Intent to him. Burgess’s dystopian novel, which coined the term “ultra-violence,” was judged by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best English novels of the 20th century, and was adapted as a now-classic film by Stanley Kubrick Its radical exploration of language, violence, and government coercion have earned it a place on banned book lists for over 50 years. Presentation copies are rare; ABPC and RBH record only 4 others sold in the last twenty years, and these are mostly signed later. Octavo (197 x 130mm).
