BURNETT, W.R. (1899-1982). The Asphalt Jungle . New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. 8 o. Original decorated boards(slight age-toning); dust jacket (a few discreet repairs to ends of spine panel); quarter morocco folding case with onlaid cloth panel based on dust jacket design. Provenance : Les Brown (1912-2001), big band leader (presentation inscription from the author on front flyleaf). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY BURNETT TO LES BROWN on the front flyleaf: "Jan. 2nd, '52. for Les Brown, Sincerely, W.R. Burnett." The first volume of the author's City trilogy portrays the "corruption of a whole city in three stages: status quo, imbalance, and anarchy." It follows the effect of a jewel heist on a gang of criminals in an unnamed Midwestern city. It would be followed by Little Men, Big World (1951) and Vanity Row (1952). The film adaptation was directed by John Huston, and starred Sterling Hayden, Sam Jaffe, and Marilyn Monroe It received four Academy Award nominations. BURNETT PRESENTATION COPIES ARE RARE.
