Chessington: 16 November [1780? or 1781?]. 2pp., folded sheet with integral address leaf (225 x 180 mm). Addressed on the address leaf to "Mrs. Thrale / Streatham / Surrey" and postmarked. Condition : small hole from opening on address leaf skillfully repaired, tipped to a paper tab along the fold. Provenance : Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton, sale; Christie's London, 29 June 1795, lot 312 (part), £2500, Quaritch. The letter begins: "Most heartily do I congratulate my kind-hearted Tyo upon the safety of her Abate, -- do but love us all as long as you love us well, & who can rival or compare with us for our good luck nel' amicizia? … I am very glad you are to have such a house full of people, & I hope they will make the foul fiend budge, -- Dr. Johnson, I hope, will buffet it, Mrs. Strickland fish it some where else, Mrs. Davenant laugh it out of countenance, & Piozzi charm it away by his singing…" After gossiping about various members of their circle, Burney closes the letter with, "Adieu, Dearest Madam, I am glad my Journal diverted you, -- I know, indeed your taste for a pretty little bit of sedition & I guessed it was hereditary…"
