Autograph letter signed from Burney's niece to Mrs. Pearce, describing the death of Fanny Burney.
London]: 4 February 1840. 3pp., folded sheet (185 x 115 mm). Mourning stationery. Condition : some separations at folds, soiling to address leaf. Provenance : sale Christie's London, 29 April 1981, lot 163, £60, Quaritch. The letter begins: "You will be grieved to hear that we have lost my dear and honoured Aunt Madame d'Arblay. She was taken from us after an illness of two months in which I trust she did not suffer severely. Her last words were, that she was willing to die for she put her trust in her Redeemer…" The letter continues by informing Pearce that she has been bequeathed twenty pounds and half of Burney's linen, flannels and stockings. The address leaf reveals Mrs. Pearce to be "formerly Ramsay" suggesting the recipient as Elizabeth Ramsay, the daughter of Burney's landlord at Ilfracombe. Not in Hemlow, Catalogue of Burney Family Correspondence.
