Cette création du " petit homme ", réminiscence du deuxième Faust de Gœthe, où le docteur Wagner produit un être artificiel par des procédés alchimiques, semble ici résulter d'une destruction nucléaire, d'un auto-da-fé flamboyant, d'un flash sous l'emprise de stupéfiants. Burroughs s'est d'abord essayé aux arts visuels auprès de Brion Gysin inventeur du " cut-up " (découpage de textes ou images ensuite réassemblés au hasard) : il a pratiqué le coup de fusil sur contreplaqué (" wood shotgun paintings "), puis le coup de fusil sur surfaces peintes, mais n'a abordé la peinture sur papier qu'après la mort de Brion Gysin Dans un entretien publié en juillet 1996 par The L.A. Weekly (" Grandpa from Hell "), Burroughs décrit sa propre pratique artistique : " I don't know what I'm going to paint until I've painted it. I don't set out to paint something. I paint it and then I decide what I've painted and give it a title [...]. I'd say it's an emergent painting. You look at it and then things come out with photographic clarity. You see faces, feet, shoes... various objects [...] when the process is through [...]. Remember that, at one time, painting and writing were one. Cave painting. They painted what they wanted to happen. The original purpose was magical, evocative magic. But yes, I would find that I was dreaming about paintings, and sometimes what I saw in the paintings would give me ideas for writing, and vice-versa. " Exposition - WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS.
