BURTON, Richard Francis -- SWINBURNE, Algernon Charles. Memorial Verses on the Death of Richard Burton [n.p: 1891]. 2° (493 x 194mm). Broadside printer's proof, with 'new review' preceding caption title. Mounted at upper edge in a cloth and boards case (3 folds, slightly torn at one). VERY RARE PROOF PRINTING OF THE POET'S IMPASSIONED VERSES, unknown to Penzer or Casada. The two met in 1861 and became lifelong friends although Burton was often accused of corrupting him. Still, Swinburne idolized him and compared him to English heroes such as Raleigh. His poem is full of a 'bitter eloquence' brought on by Isabel's burning of the manuscript for 'The Scented Garden' and he published this just two weeks after her confession. With 2 other books by Swinburne on Burton, Burton (London: The New Review, Vol. IV, No. 21, February, 1891, FIRST PRINTING, contained on p. 97-99. Text as for 'Memorial Verses' but distinct from his 'Elegy' first printed in the Fortnightly Review 1892) and Algernon Charles Swinburne's Letters from ... to Sir Richard Burton and other correspondents (1912, ONLY PRINTING, LIMITED TO 20 COPIES - one of the seven letters is to Burton).
