c.150-piece straight-edge push-fit dissected jigsaw puzzle, press cut cardboard, depicting a young boy, hands thrust in trouser pockets looking miserably at a damaged model loco that has just been unpacked whilst his sister weeps dejectedly on the sofa, 360 x 240 mm., framed & glazed for preservation & presentation, with original patterned card box bearing printed label on upper cover, worn at extremities, 120 x 134 x 55 mm., [1937]; with the hand-cut reproduction of the same by Dave & Val Cooper, number one of 100 copies, one of only 3 felt-backed, with board box bearing printed labels, [1991] (2) *** Very rare; the original was only issued to GWR staff and, unlike the wooden jigsaws, never offered for sale to the general public. The jigsaw's full text reads "Lost In Transit! Damaged Through Thoughtlessness - £84,000 was paid on claims last year, but compensation for unsatisfactory service still leaves dissatisfied customers - Wouldn't You be annoyed if your Goods arrived Damaged? - Please help to keep traders satisfied, and so prevent business being lost to other carriers". The box's original printed label reads " May you and yours find entertainment at home in solving this Jig-Saw Puzzle. If its message goes home, you will help to solve a big problem facing the Company". It is believed that the puzzle was distributed in late 1937 but it certainly formed part of a consistent campaign by the Company to reduce damage to and loss of goods in transit. Very few complete puzzles have survived - even fewer in the fine condition of this example.
