Contemporary red morocco gilt, French royal arms [similar to Olivier 2494, fer 7] at centre of sides within wide acanthus-leaf border, crowned cypher of Louis XIV [Olivier 2492, fer 21] in spine compartments, gilt edges (slightly rubbed, spine worn, repairs at joints). Provenance : John Raskey (title inscription dated 1784, West Dean). Three works forming the 11th volume of the Cabinet du Roi , two of the works accompanied by the rare text, and with an extra suite of plates. Les plaisirs de l'Isle enchantée contains THE FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF MOLIèRE'S LA PRINCESSE D'ELIDE , the performance of which was a highlight to the festivities held at Versailles from 7 to 12 May 1664; this edition is 'd'une extrême rareté' (Guibert, Molière p.456-57). The Relation describes the fête held to console the King on his defeat at the hands of Franche-Comté and to indulge the royal court in the carnival celebrations missed due to the King's absence. The dances, theatre and feasts are depicted in the engravings. Les Divertissements celebrated Louis XIV's military victory over the same general in 1674. For the occasion Molière wrote Le malade imaginaire , the performance of which is illustrated in one engraving. The plates were clearly available with or without the text. Les Plaisirs was first issued in 1664. The extra suite of plates contained here appears to be the first issue, with the plate numbers but without the royal privilege. Cicognara 1472 (citing a copy owned by Charles de Lorraine with 21 plates by Le Pautre and Silvestre); I: Berlin Kat. 3002 (text and plates); Lipperheide Sg 14; Vinet 506. II and IV: Berlin Kat. 3001 (plates only); Lipperheide Sg 13 (plates only); Vinet 505 (1664 edition). III: Berlin Kat. 3003 (plates only); Vinet 507.
