Obwohl Calame hauptsächlich als Maler der Alpen bekannt ist, so gibt es doch auch einige Kompositionen von ihm, die die Eigenheit und Schönheit der Landschaft Italiens zeigen. Von September 1844 bis März 1845 führte Calame eine Gruppe von acht Kunststudenten durch Italien. Über den Golf von Neapel bemerkt Calame folgendes "It delighted me at first sight; this brilliant light, these picturesque buildings, the blue sea and the extreme clarity of the air give one a sense of ease. I cannot sufficiently admire the harmony of tones and their richness; I promised myself an ample harvest of memories, and, between us, something a little more useful-studies." Auf dieser Reise dürfte die schnell und gekonnt auf Papier entwickelte Studie entstanden sein. Eine vergleichbare Ölstudie des Künstlers mit dem Blick auf Pozzuoli und den Golf von Neapel bewahrt das Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. - Verso mit rotem Siegellackstempel im Oval "Alexandre Calame", sowie auf dem Keilrahmen ein Klebeetikett mit handschriftl. Annotationen in brauner Feder "Tableau de Calame que mon ami donner ma cegui par testament / CT / Vue d'Ischia ...aout 1883".
