CALENDRIER DES BERGERS -- Le kalendreier des bergiers . Lyon: Claude Nourry for Jacques Huguetan, 21 December 1502.
CALENDRIER DES BERGERS -- Le kalendreier des bergiers . Lyon: Claude Nourry for Jacques Huguetan, 21 December 1502. 4 o (228 x 157 mm). Collation : a-m 8 . 91 leaves (of 94, lacking g4.5 and m8 with printer's device and notice that the book can be purchased from Jacques Huguetan in Lyon and Benoit Huguetan in Paris). Gothic types. Title and calendar printed in red and black. Woodcut initial on title, 26 large woodcuts, 37 smaller cuts, woodcut initials and small border cuts. (Title somewhat soiled, gutter margin of m1 reinforced, short repaired tear crossing text in gutter margin of m 8 , some worming occasional catching letters.) 18th-century vellum over pasteboard (stitching defective). Provenance : early inscription on title (faded) -- Leroy Crummer (1872-1934), physician from Omaha, Nebraska and medical book collector (bookplate on rear pastedown) -- acquired from Hamill & Barker, 1978. FIRST LYON EDITION, one of only two located copies and the only one in private hands (that at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, described by H.O. Somers, is the only other copy recorded). The Shepherd's Calendar was first printed in 1491 by Guyot Marchant at Paris, and was reprinted many times in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Based on the equation of the life of a man with the cycle of the year, the text offers a mixture of moral instruction and practical advice. The blocks in the present edition come from various sources, all based on Marchant's original edition, and their sizes and subjects are dramatically diverse. Included are anatomical and zodiacal figures, the occupations of the months, the tortures of hell, Christ and his disciples, saints, Horae B.M.V. subjects and the celestial spheres. The text is divided into sections that include the calendar, the tree of vices and the pains of hell, the way of health and the tree of virtue, health and medicine, and astrology and physiognomy. Baudrier XII, p.102; H.O. Somer, The Kalender of Shepherdes (1892), pp.19-20.
