CALLOT, Jacques. Balli di Sfessania . [Nancy: ca 1622 and later] Set of 23 (of 24) etched plates, approximately 75 x 95mm., comprising title with artist's imprint and 22 plates (lacking L.400; 2 plates with platemark cropped, one plate torn and slightly defective in lower blank margin, repaired; 2 plates a little spotted, 2 slightly discoloured). Mounted on laid paper watermarked Auvergne 1742 , bound in nineteenth century red half morocco gilt, 8°. Provenance : Ernald Edward Richardson bookplate. Mixed set of one of the most original and sought-after of Callot's works. As Lieure (vol. I pp. 81-2) says, it gives "une idée de la vie de Florence, de ses fêtes et surtout de ces inoubliables manifestations de la Comédie italienne, avec ses farces et ses bouffonneries innombrables...C'est le chef-d'oeuvre du genre. C'est aussi le monument le plus complet et le plus curieux qui nous reste de la Comédie italienne". At least 5 plates are late states, two with numbers added. cf Lieure 397-402. Sold with: [CHRISTOPHER WEIGEL]. Series of 504 engravings on 86 leaves (all, except 2, with 4 small scenes within fine engraved borders and with Latin captions below), illustrating the Old and New Testament and historical events to the end of the seventeenth century, oblong 4°, calf (upper cover detached), [Nuremberg, ca. 1698?].
