CALLOT, JACQUES. Les Miseres et les Malheurs de la Guerre. Representez par Iacques Callot... et mis en lumiere par Israel son amy. Paris: [Israël Henriet] 1633. Oblong folio, 195 x 307mm. (7 15/16 x 12 in.), early eighteenth-century mottled calf, smooth spine gilt, morocco lettering-piece, edges stained red, rubbed, inner hinges cracked, vertical crease to title leaf, soft crease to second leaf, occasional minor marginal soiling . 18 etchings by Callot including etched title ( platemarks 82 x 186 mm. ), title and pl. 18 in the third state, 2-17 in the second state, with engraved verses by the abbé de Marolles in lower margins. Lieure 1339-56; Brunet I, 1489. A FINE COPY OF CALLOT'S MOST WELL-KNOWN SUITE OF ETCHINGS, AND POSSIBLY HIS GREATEST WORK. Known as the "Grandes Misères de la Guerre" to distinguish it from a suite of 8 etchings on the same theme executed earlier but published only after Callot's death, the Misères et Malheurs de la Guerre is a chillingly eloquent depiction of the horrors of war. Published two years before his death, the work's grimness reflects Callot's discouragement at the situation in his native province of Lorraine (invaded by Louis XIII in 1631) as well as his physical sufferings from the stomach tumor that was to kill him. Provenance : Wilfred Lanson, engraved armorial bookplate -- Édouard Rahir, bookplate (sale, Paris, part 5, 19-21 May 1937, lot 1276).
