CAMDEN, William (1551-1623). Britannia . London: Christopher Brown 1752. 2° (325 x 224mm). Hand-coloured engraved title by William Hole 57 hand-coloured engraved maps by Hole, William Kip and Robert Vaughan after Christopher Saxton, John Norden John Speed and George Owen 55 double-page, map of Hampshire folding, double-page plan of the Hot and Cross Baths at Bath by John Oliver after Thomas Johnson all maps and plans numbered in manuscript on the rectos and versos. Manuscript index leaf titled 'A Table in whatt folio any Sheire may be found,' letterpress leaf with Latin verses on recto and Anglo-Saxon alphabet on verso. (Occasional light dampstaining and spotting, a few tiny wormholes, map of Rutland and index leaf trimmed.) Contemporary reversed calf, covers panelled in blind with floral and other rolls, upper cover with gilt-stamped device at centre, leather lettering-piece (lightly rubbed with loss at corners, spine ends with short tears and consequent loss, front free endpaper partially detached). Provenance : Christopher Brown Chilthorn, gift inscription to: -- Edward Phelips, Montacute House, Somersetshire (b. 1725, Latin inscription on front pastedown dated 1752; second, similar inscription on rear pastedown) -- clipped catalogue description (? referring to this copy). A RARE EDITION OF CAMDEN'S BRITANNIA ; A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE EDITOR AND PUBLISHER, Christopher Brown The maps of the 1607 edition (the last published by Camden himself), were retouched and reprinted in 1637. This edition uses those maps with two exceptions; the maps of Hampshire and Brecknock, which were replaced by Brown's edition of Speed's map of Hampshire and Robert Vaughan's copy of Kip's map of Brecknock. To these maps are added a manuscript index and a letterpress leaf (before the maps), and a plate of the baths at Bath. No copy of this edition is recorded in ESTC, and the copy cited by Chubb is the only one that can be located. Chubb XXI (with Brown's autograph and the date 1752, but without the plate of the baths at Bath).
