Nuremberg: [part 1] for Johann Hofmann and Hubert Camoxius, 1590 [1593]: [part 2] P. Kaufmann, 1595. 2 parts (of 4) in one volume, 4 o (190 x 141mm), italic, roman and Greek types, two elaborate engraved titles (the first by M. V. Somer), 400 circular emblematic illustrations in the text attributed to Hans Siebmacher. (Minor staining to a few margins). Contemporary German vellum, blind-tooled medallion in center of both covers, remains of silk ties. Provenance : Paulus Colerus of Nuremberg (presentation inscription BY THE AUTHOR on second title-page); acquired in 1958. FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST BOTANICAL EMBLEM BOOK, together with Camerarius's zoological emblem book devoted to quadrupeds. Two additional collections featured insect and birds and insects, fish and reptiles. Brunet I:1513; Landwehr German 162-4; Nissen BBI 312. Nissen ZBI 792; Praz p.295 (noting an engraved portrait, perhaps a later insert).
