CAMERON, Sir Roderick William (1823-1900). AN IMPORTANT GROUP OF HORSE-RACING BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY OF SIR RODERICK WILLIAM CAMERON, founding member of the American Jockey Club at Jerome Park in 1866 and owner of the influential Clifton Berley Stud on Staten Island. A central figure in the revival of the sport of horse-racing in New York after the Civil War, in 1865 Cameron imported probably the single most influential group of horses to America from England in the modern history of the turf, amongst them the first and foremost of stallions Leamington (1853-1878). With a distinguished career winning races at Epsom, Goodwood and Ascot before his arrival in America, Leamington subsequently sired many famous winners including the colt Aristides, the first winner of the Kentucky Derby, and Iroquois, the first American bred horse to win the Epsom Derby.

Jerome") and recorded some subsequent buyers (Hartington: "sold to D. Carter Brown 2' of Providence for $3500").
