Campaign Medals. A Jutland casualty group of five to Fleet Paymaster J.S. Place, Royal Navy, killed in action 31.5.1916. Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (Ast. Payr. J.S.Place. R.N. H.M.S. Monarch.), 1914-15 Star (Ft. Payr. J.S. Place, R.N.), British War and Victory Medals (Ft. Payr. J.S. Place. R.N.), Second Cruiser Squadron Medal for the Goodwill tour of South America and South Africa in 1908, with eight clasps for Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Simonstown, Capetown, St Helena, Rio de Janeiro, Mont Video, unnamed as issued, good very fine, together with the Jutland Memorial Medallion, pewter issue plus a miniature medal of the same, silver issue mounted for wear with straight bar suspension, sold with copied paperwork. Fleet Paymaster John Spencer Place (1875-1916), born in Warrington, Lancashire, joined the Royal Navy in 1892, posted as Assistant Clerk aboard the battleship H.M.S. Victoria in the same year, saw service in the Mediterranean, but was fortunate to be posted to the Orlando Class armoured cruiser H.M.S. Immortalite from 1893, as on 22 June 1893, Victoria collided with Camperdown during fleet exercises, and sank with the loss of 358 men drowned out of the 583 crew onboard. Place served in the cruiser H.M.S. Blenhein from 1894 and promoted to Clerk, various on and offshore posts, served in H.M.S. Monarch during the Boer War when she was serving at Guardship at Simons Town. Following the Boer War Place was posted to the Torpedo School H.M.S. Defiance and later promoted to Paymaster in 1904, served in H.M.S. Antrim in 1907 and was aboard her during the Second Cruiser Squadron Goodwill tour of South America and South Africa in 1908. Was present aboard H.M.S. Southampton during the outbreak of the Great War as part of the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron, and would have been present at the First Battle of Heligoland Bight on 28 August 1914, and at Battle of Dogger Bank on 24 January 1915, before being posted to the Queen Elizabeth class battleship H.M.S. Barham from 2 July 1915. Barham was commissioned in August 1915, joining the 5th Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet based at Scapa Flow as flagship on 2 October 1915. On 1 December 1915 Barham collided with her sister ship H.M.S. Warspite, with both ships receiving considerable damage. Barham was repaired and Place was present aboard Barham when she was flagship to Admiral Hugh Evan- Thomas and the 5th Battle Squadron, attached to Admiral Beatys battlecruiser fleet. During the battle Barham fired 337 15-inch shells and 25-6inch shells, Barham received six hits, five of which were from 12 inch shells, suffering casualties of 26 killed and 46 wounded, Place was killed in action at Jutland on 31 May 1916, being possibly the only man of this rank killed in action during the battle. Place is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. (5)
