Lot includes CDV, saddle bag, and newspaper obituary of Captain Julius M. Keeler. CDV is of Keeler in captain's uniform, with a five cent revenue stamp affixed on verso, matted in a Cliff House / San Francisco, tintype sleeve, and placed in a small frame. Saddle bag is 5 x 9 x 15 in., affixed under the flap with the partial label of a military saddler. Obituary is in the February 6, 1890, edition of the Inyo County Register. The CDV and obituary were discovered inside the saddle bag. Julius M. Keeler, originally of Malone, New York, attended Union College in Albany, where he met a group of friends with whom he purchased a boat and made the journey around Cape Horn to California, not long after the Gold Rush. He ended up teaching at Tualatin Academy in Oregon, teaching the first college-level courses at the school that would become Pacific University. In July of 1861, Keeler returned east to enlist in the 5th Connecticut Infantry, and was commissioned first lieutenant in Co. H. He resigned in May 1863 to accept a captain's commission in U.S. Volunteers Provost Marshal Cavalry, and served in that capacity through the end of the war. Captain Keeler returned to the West and became involved in the mining industry at Inyo, California, from which he was elected to the California State Senate. Condition: Very good.
