A Japanese World War II era map of Iwo Jima, site of the February 19-March 26, 1945 invasion by United States forces. 35 x 19.5 in. (sight), framed to 41 x 27.25 in. The map is hand rendered on delicate paper with geographical locations, squadron movements, and military installations labeled in Japanese. Three airfields, the main targets during the Marine invasion, are outlined in red: Motoyama #1 (South Field) with three intersecting strips, Motoyama #2 (Central Field) with two x-shaped strips, and Motoyama #3 with a single strip and noted as unfinished. Three artillery batteries (砲台), a weather station, and the air squadron headquarters (空隊 本部) are also circled in red dotted lines. Mt. Suribachi (摺鉢山) is noted on the far right of the map, the highest point of the island and location of the iconic photograph by Joe Rosenthal Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. Condition: Tape residue in several areas, heavy creasing and wrinkling, tears to corners.
