an 8 x 9.8" silver print with Carl Van Vechten blindstamp and ink stamped studio markings and pencil date of June 13 1934, in acid free archival mat with Sotheby's New York lot sticker on front of mat and Sotheby inventory label on reverse of mat, mat is 15 x 16". Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) became assistant music critic at the New York Times in 1906, and after a trip to Europe became the first American critic of modern dance. He first met Gertrude Stein in 1913 in Paris and they remained close friends for the remainder of her life. While Van Vechten was married to Anna Snyder and Fania Marinoff for nearly all of his adult life, he was a bisexual. Provenance: Ex James E. Sanders Collection Condition: NULL
