Carlos II of Spain, King.- Manuscript diploma of recognition of the title of Marquis of Torre Gines, in Spanish, for Don Martin Damian Mendizabal, signed by Charles II of Spain ‘Yo el Rey’, and various Royal secretaries, 5 leaves, written on vellum in brown ink, illuminated throughout, full page colour frontispieces, depicting the Royal coat of arms and a medallion with Charles II’s portrait on a balustrade, surrounded by 5 allegorical figures, text pages in calligraphy within floral borders incorporating Royal arms and smaller illustrations of Governors’, Biblical figures and ancient heroes (Charles V, Leopold I, King Arthur, Godfrey of Bouillon, David, Charlemagne, the Duke Leopold of Lorain, the Duke Maximilian II, Emanuel of Bavaria, Giosué and Judah, ink and colour slightly faded, a few tiny holes to first leaf, minor soiling, Madrid, 28th May 1699, [with] printed copy of the oath of fidelity to the king of Spain, ‘Copia autorizada del juramento de fidelidad y pleyto omena je a favour del gran monarca D. Felipe V…del Sr. Marques de la Torre de Gines Don Martin Damiano’…, 14 unnumbered pages, title and text within woodcut frames, 1 historiated initial, Royal stamps dated 1701, dust soiling and thumbing, small folio (315x215mm), n.p., n.d. [1701], leaves mostly loose, contemporary velvet over wooden boards, joints split, binding detached, remains of silver clasps featuring masks, a little stained and discoloured, rubbed with loss to corners and spine extremities; and 2 letters loosely inserted, one signed by Philip V, 2 pp., dated 17th September 1701, 4to, and the other addressed to the Marquis, 1p., dated 31st August 101, original seal, folio, minor soiling, folds. *** A nobility diploma granted by last Habsburg ruler of the Spain (1661-1700).
