Property from the Eric C. Caren Collection(CAROLINA COLONY) An early promotional notice for the Carolina Colony in The London Mercury, No. 36. London: Printed for T. Vile, from Friday, August 4 to Tuesday August 8, 1682 Broadsheet newspaper (12 1/4 x 7 7/8 in.; 312 x 198 mm) on laid paper, text in two columns, disbound. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. An early encouragement for the settlement of the Carolina Colony in a very rare and early London newspaper. Although a charter for the Carolina Colony was first granted in 1629, it remained essentially unsettled until Charles II granted a new charter in 1663 to a group of eight English noblemen. The Lords Proprietors sent 150 colonists to the province in early 1670, but by 1680, the vast territory had a population of less than 7,000, including holdovers from earlier Spanish colonization attempts. This issue of The London Mercury reports on another embarkation of settlers and extols the features of the colony. "The Ship Fly, about 140 Tuns, now riding at Deptford, will this Week set Sail, having on board her above 100 Passengers, for the Colony of Carolina, that Country being wonderfully improved of late and by the Relation of those who came from the Spot, does far exceed the that has been given of it."Condition ReportCondition as described in catalogue entry.
