CARTA EXECUTORIA DE HILDALGUIA, issued by Charles I, King of Spain, in favour of Diego Lopez de Peredo, a transcript of an original document of 1551 on behalf of Diego Suarez de Peredo, in Spanish, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Mexico, 18 January 1591] 327 x 230mm. i + 26 leaves, 1 1 3 (of 14, xii lacking), 2 1 4 , 20 lines written in a neat italic bookhand in black ink, notary's endorsement in lower margin of each folio, opening words of each section in letters of burnished gold, large opening initial of burnished gold, FULL-PAGE ARMORIAL bearing the arms of Calderon, front flyleaf and final leaf with later annotations (lacking f.12, occasional unobtrusive light surface soiling). CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN BINDING, dark brown goatskin over wooden boards, tooled in gilt and blind, panelled sides with three concentric roll-tooled borders of heads-in-medallions, central panel and infills gilt-tooled with thistle cornerpieces and flower heads, spine in 6 compartments each with a foliate tool, metal catches (lacking clasps, lightly worn with slight loss at spine); modern box. A certified transcript issued in Mexico City, of an original patent of nobility dated Valladolid 28 March 1551, on behalf of Diego Suarez de Peredo, in ONE OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN GOLD-TOOLED MEXICAN BINDINGS. Whilst the roll-tooling in blind was probably executed with tools imported from Spain, the stylised thistle tools forming the central ornament and those placed at the angles of the panels are apparently those recorded on a Mexican binding in the British Library (dated c.1585, see F. B. de Marez Oyens, A Mexican Gilt Binding , The Book Collector, vol.27, 1978, p.380), produced 'in what may have been the first workshop in the New World to do gold tooling.' (See also P.
