CARTA EXECUTORIA, MANUSCRIPT--SPANISH]. PHILIP III, King of Spain (1578-1621). Carta executoria de Hidalguia, in favor of Bartolome Biancho, in Spanish. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. Granada, 12 February 1605. 308 x 212 mm. 58 leaves, TWO FULL-PAGE ILLUMINATIONS including the grantee's arms, a portrait of the grantee on horse back, and a depiction of the Virgin and Child, below her the kneeling family of the grantee, large illuminated initial depicting Philip III, and 18 smaller initials in red or blue, white and gold, 34 lines written in a neat round bookhand in black ink, ruled in blue, three decorative rulings to upper margins, notary's endorsement in lower margin of each recto. Contemporary Spanish brown goatskin gilt over pasteboards, the panelled sides with gilt roll-tooled borders of double-C shaped design with arabesques, military accoutrements and ropework, scrolling foliage, central panel with gilt-stamped stars, circles, head and shoulders of a man wearing a classical helmet and floral arabesque designs built from small hand tools, spine in five compartments with four raised bands, panels filled with gilt drawer handle design, red silk guards (wear to spine ends, remnants of silk ties). Also with three-inch lead, royal seal (detached from the silk ties) depicting the King enthroned on one side, and the arms of Spain on the other. This patent was issued to Bartolome Biacncho and details the military exploits of his family ancestors, Juan Perez and Alonso Martin, "hombres bueno y pechoso."
