Gravure en relief et émail champlevé : c'est sur l'alliance originale de ces deux métiers d'art que reposent la puissance et le naturel de l'animal qui, à peine contenu dans la boîte, s'échappe du cadran et s'installe tout autour de la carrure de la montre. Composé de quatre pièces assemblées au fil d'un ajustage précis, la gravure du cadran en haut-relief permet d'ombrer chaque détail, de faire ressortir le creux de l'œil, le profilé de la mâchoire, le volume du museau, au point que l'animal semble sortir de la montre. Un réalisme d'autant plus saisissant que l'artisan y ajoute la sensation d'un pelage, le rayonné des yeux travaillé à l'échoppe plate, puis piqué à l'onglette fine. Opération délicate comme celle qui consiste à accentuer le volume de la moustache dont les parois sont ciselées à l'onglette puis polies séparément à la gomme. Plus de soixante heures ont été nécessaires à la gravure et au montage et vingt-cinq heures à l'émaillage dans le respect de la technique d'émail grand feu dans des champlevés… un art brut et délicat pour une composition sauvage où se déploient sept nuances de noir, de mauve, de gris, de blanc opale, de blanc opaque, de jaunes bruns et verts, camaïeu fondu de tons fauves et ondoyants, translucides ou opaques qui rendent hommage à la majesté du jaguar. Extrait du communiqué de presse de la Maison Cartier pour le lancement de ce modèle en mars 2011 Embossed engraving and champlevé enamel: it is the combination of these two crafts that emphasises the power and character of the animal which, barely contained, appears to be escaping from the dial to settle around the breadth of the watch. Composed of four pieces assembled with a specific fitting, the high relief engraving of the dial adds shading to every detail, highlighting the hollow of the eye, the profile of the jaw and the size of the nose, so much so the animal appears to be jumping out of the watch. The realism is all the more striking as the craftsman has created the sensation of a coat and the shine of the eyes, which have been fashioned using a flat engraving tool, then pitted with a fine pointed onglette tool. It is a delicate operation such as the one used to accentuate the volume of the moustache by using a graver to define sections which are then individually polished using an abrasive rubber. Over sixty hours were required for etching and mounting, plus a further twenty five hours for grand feu enamelling using the champlevé technique... a primitive but very delicate artistic process for a wild composition which used seven shades of black, mauve, grey, opal white, opaque white, brown and green yellows, blending shades of shimmering translucent or opaque tawny colours, to pay homage to the majesty of the jaguar.
