CATHERINE DE MEDICI (Queen of France, 1547-1589). Autograph letter signed to the Bishop of Limoges (Sebastien de L'Aubespine, French Ambassador to Spain), n.p. [Paris], 16 April 1562 , defending herself strongly against various calumnies that are circulating about her, 'J'e bien voleu que tous les signeurs ayscripse du roy d'Espagne de la fason que je souis pour respect de la religion ... pour regart de manterie que lons ha distes de moy et la calomnie que lon ma donees', and denying vehemently that she has changed her religion, asking him to show the letter to the Duke of Alba and the King, and to reassure the Queen, her daughter (Elizabeth de Valois), that she will never be other than she always has been, 'qui est cretiene catolique et poynt manteuse ni desimeleuse', 1½ pages, folio , contemporary annotations, one confirming that the letter has been shown to the King and the Duke of Alba, (small tear neatly repaired at inner margin). Written five days after the Act of the Association of Protestant Nobles was drawn up. Catherine had written to de L'Aubespine on April 11th, to make known to Philip II that she had the final remedies for the situation at hand. Sebastien de L'Aubespine (1518-1582) prelate and diplomat, was ambassador of Henry II and Charles IX to Philip II. He was recalled to France in 1564. CHARLES IX (King of France, 1560-1574). Three letters signed, the first to Monsieur de Chesnaye, Paris, 9 April 1568 , expressing his satisfaction with Chesnaye's services, one page folio ; the second to Sieur de Poigny, 'gentilhomme ordinaire du chambre de Monseigneur le duc d'Anjou', [Paris] 31 August 1568 , instructing him to go to Trent, Cologne, and Mayence, to explain that the King has had to grant certain freedoms to those of the reformed religion, and to reassure them as to his intentions, 3 pages, folio ; the third to the Provost of the Merchants of Paris, Monceaulx, 4 July 1572 , concerning the army at Metz, one page, folio ; together with a letter adressed to Charles IX by the Duke of Alba, Brussels, 12 August 1571 , referring to Dunkirk and other places, and to Don Francisco d'Alava, ½ page, folio . COLIGNY, Gaspard de Chatillon, Admiral (1517-1572). Letter, partly in autograph, signed ('Chatillon'), to the Queen of Navarre (Jeanne d'Albret), St Joucy, 21 June 1569 , replying to her letter, and informing her that someone will be sent to bring the money with all speed, referring to the campaign ('J'espere que aujourdhuy nous avancerons bien les affaires que nous avons a demesler'), and to other matters, 6 lines in autograph, one page, folio ; together with a letter by the daughters of the Comte de Bouchage, and another letter.
