CATLIN, George. "Folium Reservatum." [Philadelphia, 1867]. Bifolium (250 x 174 mm). Watermarked GOTHIC. (Soft creases where folded, some light browning.) ONE OF ONLY 25 COPIES OF THIS SCARCE 3-PAGE TEXT. The "Folium Reservatum" is a very scarce survival, printed in an edition of approximately 25 copies in Philadelphia, 1867. It was meant to accompany Catlin's O-Kee-Pa: A Religious Ceremony; and Other Customs of the Mandans (London: Trübner and Co., 1867). Due to the sexually graphic nature of the frenzied buffalo dance, details of its practice were deemed too shocking for the public. The "Folium Reservatum" provided these details, though very few are known to have survived. Bennett, p.22; Field 262; Howes C244; Sabin 11543.
