Paris: Jacques-François Chereau [1723-24]. 2° (560 x 401mm). Letterpress title, 25 engraved plates. (Plate 1 with a repaired tear in the lower margin.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in eight compartments. Provenance : Imperial Hermitage, Soviet deaccession stamp 1928. The engravings reproduce the cartoons for a famous series of Gobelin tapestries based on the story of Don Quixote. The series, owing to its very decorative and spirited compositions, was one of the most successful entreprises of the Gobelins in the 18th-century. Most of Coypel's cartoons were immediately made into tapestries, the first cartoon being finished in 1716. By 1727 Coypel had painted 25 canvases. Cohen-de Ricci 214-5; T. Lefrançois, Charles-Antoine-Coypel , Paris, 1994; Sander 315.
