Il Libellus , opera del frate domenicano Jacopo da Cessole composta intorno all'anno 1300, è strutturato in quattro parti e si tratta di uno scritto a carattere edificante che, utilizzando come espediente la descrizione e la spiegazione del gioco degli scacchi e delle sue regole, procede ad un'analisi delle diverse componenti della società medievale, nonché delle virtù che esse devono coltivare per garantire l'armonico vivere comune. Opera di grande fortuna e diffusione, ebbe numerose traduzioni in tutta Europa già a partire dal XV secolo.
