Presentation copy from William Meybohm Haggard, the author's father, with his inscription on recto of half-title leaf "To Leila Lady Walsingham / from W. M. Haggard" and a publisher's slip presenting this copy tipped in ahead of the title leaf. "After writing to several publishers in vain with a view to getting this, his first book, published, Messrs. Trubner & Co. replied agreeing to print 750 copies of Cetywayo and His White Neighbours in return for Haggard's cheque for £50. By April 17, 1884, only 154 copies had been sold and the publishers wrote to Haggard in no uncertain terms as to this 'most unsatisfactory' account, but later when the author became famous through King Solomon's Mines and other novels, this edition was eventually sold." - Scott 1.
