Beschreibung:

CHAGALL, Marc (1887-1985, illustrator). Bible. Eaux-fortes originales de Marc Chagall . Paris: Triade, 1956. 2 volumes, 2 (440 x 330mm). 105 etched plates. Contemporary green morocco by Gozzi, Modena, flat spines titled in gilt, orange morocco doublures with sun-rays surrounding gilt-stamped coat-of-arms, uncut, marbled slipcases. NO. 165 OF 275 NUMBERED COPIES ON PAPIER MONTVAL, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST in black ink on limitation leaf. Chagall's celebrated biblical illustrations were undertaken as a result of a proposal made to the artist by Ambroise Vollard in 1930, but though all the 105 plates were engraved between 1931 and 1939, only 66 were successfully printed during this period, the work being undertaken by Maurice Potin. The remaining 39 plates were printed by Raymond Haasen between 1952 and 1956. The plates were destroyed on completion of the work. The text, taken from the 1638 French translation made directly from the Hebrew, was printed at the Imprimerie National by Georges Arnoult in Grandjean 'Roman du Roi' 32-point type, under the supervision of Daniel Gibelin.
