Iusques en l'an 1629 . Paris: Claude Collet, 1640. 4° (226 x 167 mm). Large engraved folding map, "Carte de Nouvelle France" (525 x 838 mm sheet), and 6 engraved illustrations in text (map trimmed close along left edge, touching border, a few short tears/creases along folds and edges). ADDITIONAL MAP BOUND IN, Pierre Du Val, “Le Canada faict par le Sr. de Champlain. ou sont La Nouvelle France, La Nouvelle Angleterre, La Nouvelle Holande, La Nouvelle Suede, La Virginie &c. . . .” Paris, [ca 1670], see below. (Paper flaw on P3 affecting text.) 17th-century vellum over pasteboard (some light wear and soiling, remnants of ties). A SUPERB COPY OF THIS SCARCE ISSUE, WITH THE RARE MAP AND THE ADDITION OF PIERRE DU VAL’S IMPORTANT MAP OF CANADA FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, third issue, with a cancel title and using the sheets of the 1632 first collected edition, with the cancelled leaves D2-3 replacing the offensive passage regarding Richelieu as in the second issue (see previous lot). This issue is EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE: we do not trace any other copy at auction in the last 100 years. The presence of Pierre Du Val’s scarce map makes this copy all the more remarkable. Alden & Landis 640/62; Bell C247; Church 446; Harrisse NF 72; JCB (3) II:280; Sabin 11840; Streit II:2522. [ Bound in :] Pierre DU VAL. “Le Canada faict par le Sr. de Champlain. ou sont La Nouvelle France, La Nouvelle Angleterre, La Nouvelle Holande, La Nouvelle Suede, La Virginie &c. . . .” Paris, [ca 1670]. State 5. 383 x 563 mm sheet. (Tear in lower margin, small whole in upper margin.) Until 1953 it was believed that this map was engraved by Du Val to show the discoveries of Champlain in the first part of the 17th Century. Lawrence Wroth, inspecting a newly acquired copy at the John Carter Brown Library, determined that it was in fact engraved by Du Val for Samuel de Champlain's 1619 Les Voyages , Le Canada facit par le Sr. de Champlain … The inscription on the JCB copy, "faict par le Sr. de Champlain. 1616," indicates that it was likely a proof state. Burden agrees, stating that the map shows “Champlain's discoveries in New France since the publication of his maps of 1612.” This original Champlain map of 1616 is more general in nature than Champlain's 1612 map, illustrating possible water routes to the Pacific Ocean and on to Asia. This example is in state 5, showing the route of an expedition undertaken in 1665 "pour aller au Iapon et alia China." Burden 309; Karpinski, L.C. (MI) XII; Kershaw 76; Imago Mundi XI (Wroth, “An Unknown Champlain Map of 1616”) 85-95; Schwartz & Ehrenberg, pl.47; Verner & Stuart-Stubbs p.31-3.
