CHARLES AND THOMAS CHARLES LEESON ROWBOTHAM Lots 40-57 are Views in England, Wales, Italy and Switzerland by Charles and Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham was the son of Thomas Leeson Rowbotham (1783-1853) who was also a landscape, marine and coastal painter. Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham exhibited from 1840-75 at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society and his landscapes were highly praised by Ruskin. He succeeded his father as Drawing Master at the Royal Naval School at New Cross. In later life he specialised in Italian landscapes, especially coastal and lakeside scenery. In 1875, the year of his death Rowbotham published a small volume of English Lake Scenery and Picturesque Scottish Scenery , he also published a series of chromolithographic Views of Wicklow and Kilarney . A series of landscapes entitled T.L. Rowbotham's Sketch Book was published after his death. Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham's studio sale was held at Christie's on 21 April 1876, thirteen years after he had held a sale of his sketches at Christie's. Charles Rowbotham the son of Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham was also a landscape painter who, like his father used a great deal of bodycolour in his work. This gave it the attractively bright and colourful appearance which characterizes the work of both the artists. Towards the end of his father's career, Charles painted many of the figures in his work
